Just working on the deck, watching my Topsy Turvy Tomato plant grow! Ah, farm life!

Hillbilly Housewife
January 11, 2009 · 5 Comments
I just found a great website called Hillbilly Housewife! I hate the word “frugal” or “cheap”. It sounds like “Lack” and that is a word I don’t like. I have tried to have a prosperity mentality my whole adult life. However I do bake and cook from scratch because it makes good “cents” and make almost all of our cleaning products. You can call it “green” if you like, but I call it smart. The cool thing about Hillbilly Housewife is the range of recipes. Plus I can relate the whole hillbilly thang!
My only challenge is to have things available when I am not home. If I have a return to the hospital with my mother, my poor DH and DD#2 are at a loss for dinner! Neither one cooks from scratch! And fast food is not an option. So I am vowing to have several meals in the freezer ready for the oven and at least one meal put together in a brown paper bag in the pantry for the stove. There. Mother of the Year, don’t you think?
Cheers!

Fall crafts

Here is the picture of the crochet acorns.
Yes, it is a terrible picture, but you get the idea.
And I made several acorn fairies. Again, the pictures came out slightly blurred. I gave two of them away to two of my dear farmgirls! The red headed fairy is on our seasonal branch over the kitchen table. (That picture was even worse!)
I will spend this lovely rainy day sewing up my embroideries.
I did make the best potato leek soup last night! Along with some fresh sourdough bread – a feast! This is my favorite time of year. I love the short days and long cold nights. A fire in the fireplace, candles on the mantle, DH and DD. What more could I want? Ok, money would be lovely and a wonderful job, but who’s complaining?
Here is a paper doll DD#2 recently made. Too cute!
Off to sew!
Cheers!

A lovely day!

It is a moist day here in Atlanta today. I love rainy days! It’s the Irish in me I guess.
I’ve been talking to a friend quite a bit about treadle sewing machines. They are THE BEST for using on quilts! She has been searching and just this week a lovely old gal came into her life! Someone’s grandmother or aunt sat at that lovely machine and treadled away sewing for her family. I love the idea of sitting down and working on history. And that it still gives what it was made to do. I would love a treadle machine for my quilting!
It has made me realize I am grateful for being able to “do what I was made to do”! Raising my children myself, cooking, sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, tatting, baking bread every week… all old-fashioned things like the treadle machine. Yet, just as important today as it was 100 years ago!
Speaking of baking – must dash! A loaf of italian bread is done!!
Cheers!

Trip to the airport
June 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment
Today we saw my DD#1 fly off to India for the month of June. It was quick and easy and they even put her on an earlier flight since they are expecting delays due to weather later this afternoon. Parking was easy, no line at the ticket counter and no line at security. Grace and Ease. Perfect. It is still hard to see that tall girl with 2 long braids head off on her own in the thicket of the airport! I can’t think too much about it or the mascara begins to run.
She got a heads up from a fellow traveler to make sure to have toilet tissue in a bag for the airport in Dehli. A little different airport that Hartsfield Atlanta. You know, I don’t need to travel to a country where I need to worry about toilets. Maybe I’m old, or maybe I’m smart. I think both! So 27 hours of air time and 2 days of travel. Once on the ground in India she immediately boards a train and continues traveling for another full day until the foothills of the Himalaya’s. Then they rest in a hotel before the ascent and living in tents. I am tired just thinking about it!
More updates on the traveling newt when we get them.
Cheers!

Menu’s to try

I have put together a Frances Virginia Tea and a Coca-Cola Tea.
I love Coca-Cola cake! I was introduced to one 24 years ago by a true southern belle of advanced years. It was a church function and she was gracious enough to give me a handwritten recipe for her cake. It is beyond sweet, but perfect for a summer afternoon!
Speaking of summer, here are some shots of DD#2 in our “pool”. What a hoot this pool is! It is a “Quick Set Pool” and it looks like a giant jam pot! We have had it 4 years now and it has stretched out so it may not be as deep as it once was, but it is bigger.
Stay cool everybody!
Cheers!
